iPhone will capture just 6 percent of mobile phone market in 2008

A survey carried out by Markitecture reveals that Apple will be able capture just 6 percent of US mobile phone market in 2008, contradicting speculation that Apple's iPhone will dazzle the mobile phone market.

Markitecture conducted the survey on a sample size of 1,300 people who owned their own cell phones. Markitecture found that over 77 percent of the sample were somewhat familiar with iPhone and its functions. Of those, 41 percent said that iPhone was a good product. This percentage increased with the awareness of the product, with over 83 percent of the sample, who were very familiar with iPhone, saying that iPhone was an excellent product.

However when it came to the question of buying the product, just 6 percent of the total sample said that they were going to purchase it next year. One of the major reasons for the public not opting for iPhone seems to be its high price. iPhone costs around $500-$600 a piece. Others say that the service is being offered on a different network than the one they are using.

Meanwhile Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has come out saying that iPhone will never be successful. "There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60 per cent or 70 per cent or 80 per cent of them, than I would to have 2 per cent or 3 per cent, which is what Apple might get", he added.
iPhone will see a US launch in June this year while it will be launched in Europe by the end of this year.
