Palm Pre video touts calendar app!

As the Mobile World Congress 09, gears up to start soon, Palm has launched its promo-video, exhibiting its GUI. The video demos how the calendar interacts with features, people, travel information and appointments. So, it shares functionality and offers advanced multitasking owing to the share feature. I have already told you about its other features here. I’m really impressed with the new webOS. Surely, this gives the iPhone a run for its money.

FaceDouble for iPhone: Celeb-face-recognition application

Do you remember ‘Hana de Celeb-do Shindan’, declaring nose to be your signature? Well, this time the iPhone catches the same bug with new label i.e. FaceDouble. This application lets you know which celeb your frontage resembles. Just select a photo or snap it and get its celebrity look-a-like! So easy and effectual; this iPhone application costs $2.00 only while the Plus version has a $4.00 asking price. I believe it’s not only a cool application, but also allows you to brighten your looks in drawing near to a similarity, if there’s any.

Nokia’s Arte series of luxury phones has a new member

While the new Nokia 8800 Gold Arte is nowhere close to Peter Aloisson’s Nokia 8800 Arte Pink, it still asks for attention. This new entrant to Nokia’s Arte series of luxury phones comes decorated with 18-carat gold and white leather. Other than the color and materials used, the rest of the features are similar to the other Arte phones. The tri-band GSM handset features a 2-inch OLED display with 240 x 320 pixels, 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus, 4GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR support, and USB 2.0 connectivity. There is no word on the release date and pricing for now, but considering the $1,615 price tag for the earlier launched sports car-inspired 8800 Carbon Arte, we can expect the new Nokia 8800 Gold Arte to cost a bit more than that.

Hands-on video of Sony Ericsson's Idou, its first S60/Symbian Foundation smartphone

With the official start of the Mobile World Congress 2009 only hours away, Sony Ericsson announced its Idou smartphone at a press event in Barcelona. We sat down with a few Sony Ericsson execs to talk about the new smartphone, which will be the first device from Sony Ericsson to run on the new Symbian Foundation(INFO) platform. The open-source Symbian Foundation OS is being built upon Nokia's S60(INFO) user interface and the Symbian OS(INFO), and will look very much like the current Nokia S60 5th Edition that runs on the Nokia 5800 XpressMedia, if our sources are to believed.

Since the Idou is a prototype, and doesn't even have an official name yet, we were unable to get video of the smartphone actually powered up. But we did get a chance to play around with the hardware enough to at least be able to imagine what is coming.

For being such early hardware, the Idou felt solidly built. We could see the 12.1 megapixel camera's autofocus lens and Xenon flash, and the signage on the device told us that it will feature DLNA compatible WiFi and GPS as well. The display measures 3.5 inches across and is in a wide screen format, though we don't know what the actual pixel resolution will be.
In terms of the look and feel of the user interface, we can expect it to be fairly true to the stock Symbian Foundation UI, which is expected to look much like S60 5th Edition. Sony Ericsson reps did say that we should expect to see the same kind of Sony Ericsson user experience type apps on the Idou as we see on Sony Ericsson's feature phones and its Xperia X1, though there was no mention specifically of the Xperia panels, which we are not expecting.

We have been told that the full announcement for the Idou, which will contain its final name, full specs, and expected availability date, will come to us by early Summer of 2009. We're looking forward to it. For now, enjoy the photos and the HD video we shot of the device.

MWC 2009: Nokia Announces Nokia 6710 Navigator and Ovi Store

Apart from the E55 and the E75, Nokia announced the successor of its 6210 Navigator named Nokia 6710 Navigator. This phone focuses more on in-car navigation and pedestrian guidance. Maybe Nokia learnt some lesson from the poor in-car navigation of the Nokia 6210 and made this amendments. Nokia 6710 comes with the latest Nokia 3.0 maps applications with a 5 mega pixel snapper. You can also geo-tag your snaps, I guess this is becoming a must-have function for all phones equipped with Navigation capabilities.
Apart from the three phones, Nokia also announced its Ovi store that will offer users a lot of content, which will be based on their locations and preferences. The content that will be offered in the Ovi Store will range from rich applications, games to widgets fro smart phones. The store will be live from May and Nokia users with S40 and S60 devices can make use of various applications and products available on this store. This is Nokia's version of its App Store. Nokia has also opened up this store for developers so that they can showcase their applications on this store and earn 70% of the money, which comes from the sale of the applications they have developed. This strategy will encourage more and more developers to develop applications for Nokia phones and make their presence felt on the Ovi Store.

Vertu Signature Dragon to spit fire on your pockets

Back in 2006, Vertu unveiled its limited edition Signature Cobra handset and exactly after two years, the luxury mobile phone maker wants to impress us with the Signature Dragon. As far as design is concerned, there looks to be nothing new except that this time, the cobra on the phone has been replaced with a dragon done in precious stones. This dazzling phone is on display at the Vertu store in the Wynn hotel, Las Vegas. Similar to the Vertu Signature Cobra, the Signature Dragon hasn’t been listed on the company’s website. Considering the fact that the Signature Cobra was priced at $310,000, we must expect the new Vertu Signature Dragon luxury phone to come with a real hefty price tag. Is someone talking about the credit crunch?

Motorola mulls eCoupled technique for wireless charging

Is it possible to transfer energy from one circuit component to another wirelessly? Well, yes, it’s possible via a shared magnetic field that suffices no need for power cords. eCoupled calls it ‘inductive coupling’. As per rep, Motorola seeks to gain entrĂ©e to the eCoupled know-how. It wishes to use the technique in wireless charging of cellphones. I think substituting battery capacity with a stand-in battery pack and an induction coil is far better an idea. What say? As of now, the project may take some time to become a reality. Nonetheless, it’s definitely worth the wait.
