Six out of the top ten selling phones have music phone capabilities that allow for download and playing music (MP3, and/or Apple's AAC, Windows WMA files), signaling a significant increase in music content functionality.

The
Nokia 6682, Samsung SGH-D807, T-Mobile MDA, the Sony Ericsson Z520a and the Motorola RAZR V3m all download and play music (MP3, and/or Apple's AAC, Windows WMA files).

"The current mobile music trend is similar to the way camera phones burst onto the scene a few years ago," said Delly Tamer, founder and CEO of LetsTalk.com. "At first, cell phones with specialized functionality drive the high-end market, but eventually, many of the phones incorporate those features and offer them at more affordable prices, driving greater adoption."

In fact, according to a May, 2006 IDC report entitled "U.S. Wireless Music 2006-2010 Forecast and Analysis", IDC predicted an optimistic future for mobile music storefronts: "OTA (over the air) mobile music storefronts are emerging as one of the most important new channels for fans to discover, purchase, and enjoy full-track music and related content…IDC's research suggests that the number of wireless full-track purchasers should eclipse the number of online music service users by year-end 2008."
