Samsung re-invents convergence with UpStage mobile device

Samsung's new UpStage is a mobile phone and Media Player in one. That's a pretty basic claim these days but what Samsung has done is actually meld the two together--one on each side. One side is built solely for media enjoyment, featuring a 2.1-inch TFT display and a large square touchpad with a play/pause button in the middle and other navigation options around the pad.

The other side is a phone thru-and-thru. When you want to make a call you "flip" from the media player side to the phone side by pressing the flip button. The phone side of the device features a tiny 65k color display and a 1.3 megapixel camera. For all intents and purposes, it looks and acts just like a regular phone.

As for the media player side, there's a tutorial that gets you acquainted with the touch pad but I still found that it was too sensitive to operate. Overall, the phone is small, coming in at a mere 1.73 x 4.07 x 0.37 inches. Think iPod Nano and you're pretty much holding the UpStage.

For my tests, I made some calls, and it worked great. Then I flipped the phone to the media side, browsed Sprint's Music Store, and previewed and purchased a song. The Sprint Music Store is the best cellphone store I've experienced, featuring more than 1.5 million songs. From your handset you can purchase and download a phone-specific and corresponding PC version of the song you want to own. The songs are currently 99 cents plus tax, and they sound great! One thing I should mention is that the phone ships with an included 64k Micro-SD card. If the card isn't in the device, then you can't download any music. That said, 1 GB cards are pretty inexpensive these days so I threw mine in and have been downloading ever since.

Overall, it's a great phone and definitely has that cool factor. I think Samsung could have included a bigger screen on the phone side and the built-in speaker leaves something to be desired, but for the price point I think it's a great buy. I also like the extra touches such as the included "flip the phone" instruction that pops up on screen when you press the flip button.

You can read more about the UpStage or purchase one for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate at SprintSpecialOffers.com.
