Dream: ON iPhone app to bring you blissful dreams

Wish to enjoy some blissful dreams tonight? A superb iPhone app called the Dream: ON will help you enjoy some perfect reveries. Dream: ON is an effort by professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire, Britain, to see whether pleasant soundscapes could influence one’s dreams. The app just checks users sleep patterns to identify when they slip to REM sleep and play preferred soundscapes to influence dreams, says Wiseman.

Studies have shown that most dreams occur during REM sleep. Your mind will be alert to other senses while you dream and so the soundscapes from your iPhone will naturally boost your dreams. Dream: ON plays the soundscape you have selected before going to bed. The soundtrack will keep your mind ready for dreaming and they will occur as you expected. But the app's developer warns that everyone won't have similar dreams. And so Dream: ON may not be effective for all and it may turn effective for many with few days' practice.
To run the Dream: ON, you are required to choose a particular soundscape from a preloaded list that includes a peaceful garden, ocean and others. It is to predetermine the mood of your dream in the night. After setting all the options, you should place your iPhone face down on the bed. The app will observe your movements during sleep and instigate dreams in you. Soon after, the app will begin to play the specific soundscape, which will lead you to a perfect dream. The app will itself adjust the sound to make sure you are not getting awake. This is what professor Richard Wiseman has to say about the Dream: ON app,\
We have created a new way of carrying out mass participation experiments. We still know relatively little about the science of dreaming and this app may provide a real breakthrough in changing how we dream, and record and track those dreams.
Apart from helping you have perfect dreams, the app has a fully functional smart alarm, which will let users wake up with a fresh mind. The alarm gently produces voice to wake you up at an optimum moment. Moreover, it has a functionality to record your dreams and sleeping patterns as graphs. In the morning, the app will show a graphical pattern of your sleep movements.
The app also has an option to help you instantly share your dreams and sleeping patterns with friends on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. The researcher behind Dream: ON is also working to develop a Dream Bank, a social platform where users can share their dreams and read the dreams of their friends. Of course, Dream: ON might be the world's biggest dream experiment ever.

FaceDouble for iPhone: Celeb-face-recognition application

Do you remember ‘Hana de Celeb-do Shindan’, declaring nose to be your signature? Well, this time the iPhone catches the same bug with new label i.e. FaceDouble. This application lets you know which celeb your frontage resembles. Just select a photo or snap it and get its celebrity look-a-like! So easy and effectual; this iPhone application costs $2.00 only while the Plus version has a $4.00 asking price. I believe it’s not only a cool application, but also allows you to brighten your looks in drawing near to a similarity, if there’s any.

Virtual vapor: iPhone gets steamy with interactive technology

Whenever iPhone rolls out an innovative application, I think of usability and most of the times I have been proved right. However, this time not so! The iSteam simulation, is an inclusion just for the sake of novelty. You’d definitely love to flaunt it on your iPhone screen; to virtually wipe out vapor on the screen is sure great fun. Apple iPhone to get 'Copy & Paste' feature

Two major flaws with the Apple iPhone are its crappy camera and the unavailability of the “Copy & Paste” feature. The latest news in the air is that Citrix is developing a receiver for the iPhone that will bring numerous Windows apps and developers to the iPhone. The Citrix Receiver for iPhone is said to be a remote screen software that hooks to a PC and makes you feel like you are running Microsoft’s OS, including copy and paste functionality. Some features that Citrix is currently eyeing include websites that require flash, medical apps, web apps that need IE and Cut & paste (within Citrix sessions). This will be the very first application that will be supported by a reputed company.

E-football on your iPhone!

I feel like I have been writing about iPhone applications since ages. We have a new application for the iPhone every third day and the latest is the LED Football 2 by Mark Helmuth. With this iPhone application, the lovers of electronic football will be able to enjoy a range of features, including running, kicking, punts, field goals and the old standby, passing. It can even emulate the slow accumulation of wear on the plastic buttons. That’s really amazing. The power is at your fingertips to bring the defense to its knees. Watch as your receiver goes wide and your Quarterback locks on. As we were talking earlier about the iPhone being a perfect gaming platform, it seems like we might see more and more gaming applications for the iPhone in the near future.

Solar powered iPhone case is partly eco-friendly!

While Apple will take its time to come up with a solar powered iPhone, a firm called Solar Arcadia has come up with a solar powered casing for your iPhone. This eco-friendly iPhone case is basically a lithium ion battery pack with a solar panel that doubles as a flip cover for the iPhone. This is a real green idea, except for the fact that the case is made of leather. Anyway, this solar case features an LED status indicator. They claim that an empty iPhone battery can be recharged in 3 hours when the included Li-Ion battery pack is full. When the battery pack is empty, you can get your iPhone recharged directly from the power of the Sun itself. The case, available in SideFlip and Leather Flip models, is not really elegant, but then, it’s about showing your eco values. Yours for $45.95!

New iPhone Design Concept from Matt Brady and Jesus Diaz: iClamshell Anyone?

I’ve got another new iPhone concept for you today! Last week we all took a look at the iPhone Pro and iPhone Elite concepts, both of these having a slider form factor that some loved, and others hated. I had to admit both concepts made me a bit giddy. This new one has me smiling as well.
The new concept (as designed by
Matt Brady, with some retouching by Jesus Diaz of Giz) is another offering for us to ponder… And yes, these are the same 2 designers that were responsible for the iPhone Pro/Elite mockups. Great work guys! This new design concept looks to be a clamshell (er, ‘iClamshell’?) that would allow the iPhone user to ‘add on’ different accessories. In this case, a snap-on keyboard. Interesting. This would certainly open up the door for Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and a lot of 3rd party accessory manufacturers to go nuts with add-ons for the device.
But enough about that, what the heck do you think of this concept? Would it fly? Is it something you’d be interested in? Or does it look just plain terrible to you? Tell me what you think in the comments.
One thing is for certain… These concepts are great, and they certainly get you thinking about what you want in your next gen iPhone… But the real important thing is what does Apple think you want in your next gen iPhone!? We’ll find out shortly at Macworld. Going to be lots of good stuff to talk about following the keynote, that’s for sure!

Nikon goes iPhone by releasing myPicturetown app

If Kodak can do it, so can Nikon. Recently, the Japanese company has released its own iPhone application called myPicturetown to allow users of their photo storing/sharing service to access the site while on-the-go from their iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

Naturally, it’s not only browsing and sharing of photos myPicturetown users can do from their iPhones. The application also enables photo upload right from the iPhone/iPod Touch, without connecting the device to a computer. In addition, photos from the user’s myPicturetown library can be rotated and moved around using iPhone and/or iPod Touch’s touchscreen.

And that’s about all we can say about it. The myPicturetown app is available as a free download and you can grab it from here (iTunes link).

Colorware's Stealth iPhone looks mean, yet fails to deliver 3G speeds

Damn Colorware and their awesome painting jobs. For a second I thought this is the long-awaited bad-ass 3G iPhone. It's all black, looks so mean and comes with a matching earphones and iPhone dock. But no, they just made it look like that, without changing anything in terms of specs. Not that we expected Colorware to do so — it's not their business after all — however we haven't expected them to release a product that could clearly resemble the 2nd-gen iPhone. That's so mean from them.

The Stealth iPhone rocks and is priced accordingly. In order to have the meanest looking iPhone in the block, prepare to pour out $675 for 8GB, or $775 for 16GB model. That's a lot…

AIRDRIVES interactive headset for iPhone

AIRDRIVES have announced an addition to their range of so-called interactive stereo earphones, introducing a model specifically catering for the iPhone (as well as BlackBerry’s Pearl and Curve). The set adds a microphone and “one-touch music-to-phone capability” to the company’s existing earphones, the InAir Technology of which places the speaker buds outside, just forward of the ear canal rather than inside as normal. This, apparently, allows you to both listen to clear music but also hear environmental sounds (such as the honking bus about to run you over).

The earphones have a 20-20,000Hz frequency range, 95dB at source and 80dB SPL at inner-ear sensitivity, and 16 Ohm impedance. All AirDrives earphones exceed the House Ear Institute and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards for all-day listening based on sound pressure levels detected at the inner ear.

They’re apparently available now for $99.99.

Apple Drops Price on 1 GB iPod Shuffle; 2 GB Model Coming Soon

Every time the Apple Store goes down, an angel gets its wings. Ok, maybe that’s not entirely true, but if it was true there would be a whole lot of newly-winged angels these days. The Apple Store seems to drop offline every Tuesday lately and once it comes back up, we have something new to talk about.
This week, it’s a $30 price slash on the iPod Shuffle. The current model of the Shuffle holds 1 GB of music and is now available for a pretty reasonable $49. Later this month, Apple will also be releasing a 2 GB version that will be available for $69; $10 less than the old 1 GB price point.
The iPod Shuffle is hardly an audiophile’s dream, but it makes a great little gift for that person you just don’t really care about. You know, the annoying friend that you have to buy a decent gift for because your girlfriend will never hear the end of it if you don’t? Plus it’s nice and tiny so when he or she loses it, your girlfriend can give them plenty of grief about it and you get a brief but enjoyable moment of devious satisfaction.

Photo2Lab for iPhone - Online photo printing service for the iPhone gets real

We’re not sure that many users will be taking advantage of an online photo-printing service for the iPhone. The iPhone’s camera isn’t anything special and the lack of a built-in flash turns night-shots into nightmare shots. But, that didn’t stop ECCE TERRAM from bringing an online photo-printing service to the iPhone.

ECCE TERRAM has announced that they will be launching an iPhone client that allows iPhone users to order prints of their pictures online, directly from their iPhone. It seems that the iPhone’s ability to store your digital picture album and multi-touch image manipulation makes the iPhone “the first attractive and user-friendly mobile phone photo print application that will be loved by its users.”

Users will be able to order picture-books and postcards printed from the image files on their iPhone - either taken with the iPhone’s camera or transferred from their computer.

A final version of the ECCE TERRAM iPhone picture-printing service should be available shortly after Apple releases the official iPhone SDK.

Apple Delivers iPhone software update 1.1.3

Apple today announced a free software update for its iPhone that allows users to automatically find their location using the redesigned Maps application; text message multiple people in one message; create Web Clips for their favorite websites; customize their home screen; and watch movies rented from the new iTunes Movie Rentals right on their iPhone.

New iPhone products shipping from the factory will include the software update and existing iPhone customers will automatically get the update for free when they sync their iPhone with iTunes (http://www.itunes.com/).

Maps, one of the most popular and helpful applications on iPhone, has a new interface that is simpler and easier to use and adds incredible new features such as the ability to find your location automatically. With just the tap of a button, iPhone can now triangulate your position using nearby Wi-Fi base stations or cellular towers. You can use this as a starting or ending point for directions or to find local points of interest. The new hybrid map view combines map view and satellite view so you can see major street names overlaid on satellite imagery.

Users can now create Web Clips - icons on the home screen that take you directly to your favorite websites, including to the exact spot you have zoomed into. Web Clips are a great way to easily track websites that you frequently check such as news, blogs, sports sites and movie listings. In addition, users can now customize their home screen by repositioning any of the icons, and even create up to nine different home screens that they can easily flick between.

iPhone’s new software update also adds the ability to send the same SMS text message to multiple people, and iPhone saves a history of your text messages, so with one tap you can send a new message to the same group.

With Apple's new iTunes Movie Rentals, movie fans can rent movies on their computer, easily and quickly transfer them to their iPhone, and watch them anywhere on iPhone's gorgeous 3.5 inch screen. Users can also now navigate forward or backward through their movies by chapters, select alternate language tracks and view subtitles, if available.

The iPhone software update 1.1.3 is available immediately for free via iTunes 7.5 or later for all existing iPhone customers in the US, UK, Germany and France.

Google upgrade iPhone interface: faster & more finger-friendly

Google has done its bit in celebrating Macworld by upgrading the customised ‘iGoogle’ interface designed especially for the iPhone. The first version, launched at the beginning of December, brought mobile Safari-friendly access of search, Gmail, Calendar and Reader to the handset, while this upgrade boosts speed, increases the flexibility in arranging tabs and options, adds automatic refresh to the Gmail inbox and brings iGoogle gadgets to the cellphone.

With plans to roll out the improved UI to international versions of the iPhone, as well as other handsets “that offer similar usability and browser capabilities”, this will only add fuel to the rumors that Google see the iPhone as a test-bed for internet-based applications eventually to be found on their own Android cellphone platform.

You can access the new version by visiting http://www.google.com/ on your iPhone.

China Mobile and Apple Call Off iPhone Negotiations

By Bryan Gardiner

Talks between China's largest mobile operator and Apple about introducing the iPhone in the country have ended, according to company officials.

On Monday, a spokeswoman for China Mobile confirmed with the AP that the two parties have walked away from the negotiating table. At the moment, neither company is giving a specific reason.

"We can only say that negotiations have ended for now," a spokeswoman for China Mobile Communications told the AP. "We have no other news to report." Chinese Internet portal Sina.com promptly started reporting that (surprise, surprise), the deal-breaker was likely the 20-to-30 percent revenue share agreement Apple was likely demanding.

Late in November, a similar report surfaced in various Chinese papers. China Mobile quickly denied that claim and said the two companies were still working on a deal. In fact, many analysts speculated that China Mobile itself was likely the source of the report and was using the rumor as an attempt to win concessions from Apple.

"(China Mobile) knows that Apple is talking to all the Chinese carriers," Blackfriars' Carl Howe speculated a few months back. "So it spreads rumors that the talks have broken down and seeds another rumor that it is bringing in Blackberries for its customers instead."

Apparently, the attempt didn't work. As many analysts have noted, playing hardball with Apple remains a risky endeavor. The company is notorious for dictating terms and then refusing to budge when dealing with outside parties. Yet the fact remains that China and its estimated 300 million mobile subscribers (a number that will grow to 500 million over the next few years) would have been a huge market for Apple. As we noted before, if Apple did land a deal with the mobile provider, it could have been one of the biggest drivers iPhone sales to date.

For that reason, China Mobile may have believed it had a bit more leverage at the negotiating table.

In light of Monday's announcement, focus has now shifted to China Unicom. Market watchers and analysts both seem to think that breakdown in talks between Apple and China Mobile is good news for the company's closest rival. As a smaller company, China Unicom may also be more willing to bend to Apple's demands.

The dissolution in talks also highlights another important fact. Namely, that Apple thinks it doesn't need China to hit that 10 million iPhone mark by the end of the year. Put simply, Apple's willingness to simply give up on a deal with China's largest mobile operator could point to a successful holiday season here in the U.S. for the iPhone, as well as healthy sales in Europe.

Steve Jobs is expected to announce current iPhone sales figures tomorrow at the Macworld keynote.

Nokia Asks Jobs If iTunes Can Come Out and Play

Does Nokia's multimedia guru Anssi Vanjoki read Gizmodo? A few months back, when Nokia launched its Ovi mobile media portal, our own personal Jesus ridiculed its use of Windows Mobile content as not being able to keep up with iTunes. Well, right or wrong, Nokia got the message, and Vanjoki is now inviting Steve Jobs by name to let iTunes appear in Ovi's "open door" of goods and services. Besides the fact that the only answer I can imagine Steve uttering has a few f-bombs in it, how would that even work? Wouldn't Nokia phones and other Ovi-friendly devices need the coveted iTunes DRM? Or would it be for unlocked AAC iTunes Plus content only? [Press Release]
