Lava Xolo X900: Intel Medfield-based phone to hit stores next week

Lava International is all set to release the first smartphone with Intel’s newly announced Medfield mobile chips in India. Dubbed the Xolo X900, the phone will run on as-yet-unspecified version of Google Android. The device was originally announced at the Mobile World Congress 2012 by the Lava executives and Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini. Intel has also signed deals with Lenovo, Motorola and Orange besides Lava to produce hardware solutions for its new Atom chips for mobile devices.

The Lava Xolo X900 will tout rich specs under the hood. The device will sport a 4.03-inch touchscreen with decent screen resolution and clarity. Intel’s new Z2460 single core processor with a clock-speed of 1.6GHz will power the gadget. The processor can ensure long battery life (up to 8 hours) with the 3G voice calling. You can enjoy six hours of HD video and five hours of 3G web browsing and 14 hours of standby on single charge.

It seems that Lava would become the first firm in the world to release an Intel Medfield-based device. Lenovo’s WMC 2012-featured K900 smartphone is only to come in May, 2012. Motorola and Orange haven’t yet announced their Intel devices. Thus, Lava Xolo X900 may be the first device with Intel's mobile processor.

The chip maker, which has been dominating the chip market for PCs and servers, wishes to enter into the mobile market with its new range of mobile processors. Mr. Otellini thinks that there is enough space for Intel to get into the mobile industry, which is currently dominated by the Cambridge, U.K-based ARM Holdings. Intel is in efforts to put holes in the supremacy of ARM. The company has already started talks with the leading tech makers like Apple and Samsung to encourage them to use its Medfield chips in their products.

Huawei E5 Portable 3G Wireless Router

To be announced in China this month, Huawei E5 is a portable wireless router that makes use of 3G wireless signal to share the connection via wireless network. E5 is compatible with HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz and EDGE/GPRS/GSM 1900/1800/900/850 MHz network, supports up to 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA data connection. It can also be used as a microSD card reader with the built in microSD card slot. Powered by a USB connection, the little portable router has a built in battery to share the internet access for approximately 4 hours at a single charge.

T-Mobile 3G coverage map hits the web

With the T-Mobile event tomorrow, it is only appropriate that the carrier has now placed their coverage map online so users can see what areas have or will get 3G coverage.

As you probably know already, T-Mobile has launched a huge roll out of 3G network coverage over the next couple of months, bringing the service to major cities all across the country. Now, you can keep up to date with this useful tool and see how your 3G data connection is doing. You can also view how the signal strength is in your area.

Colorware's Stealth iPhone looks mean, yet fails to deliver 3G speeds

Damn Colorware and their awesome painting jobs. For a second I thought this is the long-awaited bad-ass 3G iPhone. It's all black, looks so mean and comes with a matching earphones and iPhone dock. But no, they just made it look like that, without changing anything in terms of specs. Not that we expected Colorware to do so — it's not their business after all — however we haven't expected them to release a product that could clearly resemble the 2nd-gen iPhone. That's so mean from them.

The Stealth iPhone rocks and is priced accordingly. In order to have the meanest looking iPhone in the block, prepare to pour out $675 for 8GB, or $775 for 16GB model. That's a lot…

Kevin Rose says 3G iPhone will do 3G video chat with iChat

Kevin Rose, Digg founder and Apple hardware prognosticator, just threw more fuel on 3G iPhone rumor-flames everywhere. It seems that having founded the uber-popular social-networking news site give Kevin Rose an inside line on some iPhone rumors.

Rose previously speculated on the iPhone's initial release, citing sources that indicated the iPhone would launch with two battery compartments, slide-out keyboard, and both GSM and CDMA versions. All his predictions failed to materialize - but then again, that's how the rumor-game goes.



Rose's most recent sources point to the 3G iPhone rocking true-blue, two-way video chat over AT&T's now-expanding 3G network. He says that the 3G iPhone will use a dual-camera setup (one camera on the rear for picture-taking duty and a front-facing cam under the multi-touch display glass) to get jiggy with video calls. Futhermore, the Digg founder claims that Apple is restricting third-party iPhone applications from running in the background in order to squash any potential competition to its iChat application - through which the iPhone is said to deliver its video chat goodness.

We'll just have to wait and see. It's looking like the 3G iPhone could be launching in a few months, so the wait may not be that long…

RIM prepping 3G, iPhone-fighting BlackBerry 9000/9xxx?

RIM is really on a roll recently. They’ve been pumping out handsets faster than ever, and it looks like RIM’s next big handset will aim at Apple’s iPhone. It makes sense, since every phone manufacturer out there is gunning to, well, out-gun the iPhone with touchscreen offerings of their own. Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the unfortunately touchscreen-less lineup of BlackBerry smartphones, is reportedly working on a new BlackBerry 9xxx/9000 that takes aim squarely at the iPhone.


We’re hearing through the grapevine that RIM’s BlackBerry 9xxx/9000 will be sporting a full-fledged 3G radio with HSDPA (on US-friendly frequencies), 600Mhz processor, and an undeniably iPhone-esque design. As you can see from Boy Genius’s questionable mockup/blurry spy pic, the BlackBerry 9000 is looking pretty damn slick. We can only guess that the full-body screen will be a touchscreen (if not as the sole means of input, then perhaps with a slide-out keyboard). Oh, and we’re also hearing that the BlackBerry 9xxx will have a backup feature that will move all data on the phone to a removable memory card.

With a release date slated for early 2008, we’re sure recent BlackBerry 8800 buyers aren’t none too pleased. But, being firmly planted in speculative soil, BlackBerry 8800 owners can hope that this rumor turns out to be nothing more than that - a rumor. We’re thinking that this BlackBerry 9xxx could indeed be in the works - it makes sense for RIM to go after Apple’s iPhone. Stay tuned!

AT&T to launch a 3G HTC Vox soon?

While we could file this under “early stage rumor”, the device in subject is a very interesting one, hence we’re writing about it.
Apparently, AT&T will be launching a 3G version of the HTC
Vox/Libra as HTC Juno in a not-that-distant future.

The new device should sport a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a tri-band UMTS/HSDPA radios, 2 MP camera, Qualcomm MSM7200 400 MHz CPU and should run the latest Windows Mobile 6 Standard Edition (non-touchscreen) mobile OS. On the other hand, it’s still unclear whether the HTC Juno will come with the front facing camera and the WiFi, although we crave for the latter. Stay tuned, as we keep you well informed…

Motorola 3G phone suits business users

Motorola’s KRZR series is now business-user friendly with the inclusion of the 3G-compatible MOTOKRZR K3.

With high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA), or 3G, users can transfer data between their K3 (RRP $654) handset and their computer at high speeds of up to 3.6mbps, removing any limitations previously experienced by those with slow network connections.

Nokia to use Chinese 3G technology

TD-SCDMA back-end hardware sales near $1bn in first quarter

Nokia will begin selling phones based on China's TD-SCDMA technology next year, according to local press reports.
The world's largest mobile phone maker expects to have handsets available during the first half of 2008.

TD-SCDMA is China's home-developed 3G standard. The government has strongly backed the standard in an attempt to reduce China's reliance on expensive foreign technology.

However, the rollout of 3G phones in the country has been delayed for years while bugs in TD-SCDMA are ironed out.

Although 3G networks have still not been officially launched in China, the market for TD-SCDMA equipment reached $910m in the first quarter of 2007, according to research firm Analysys International.

The spending is believed to be almost entirely devoted to infrastructure, as 3G handsets are not yet on sale.

Local firms ZTE and Datang are leading TD-SCDMA sales with 46.3 per cent and 26.8 per cent of the market respectively.

TD Tech, a joint venture between China's largest mobile manufacturer, Huawei, and Europe's Nokia and Siemens took only 14.8 per cent.

The hardware sales reflect the actions of the world's largest mobile carrier, China Mobile, which recently doled out TD-SCDMA infrastructure contracts for six major cities, including Beijing and Tianjin, which both have populations over 10 million.

These 3G networks, despite their size, remain off limits to the general public as the government has yet to grant 3G licences.

Trial networks based on the foreign W-CDMA and CDMA2000 3G standards were established last year, and are still awaiting government approval to start public operation.

In related news, Nokia has announced the establishment of a research facility at Beijing's prestigious Tsinghua University.

"In some ways, the future of mobile technology is the future of all technology in China," said Professor Niu Zhisheng of Tsinghua University.

"The country has set itself the goal of developing indigenous innovation and, with four times as many mobile subscribers as internet users, the opportunities within mobile technology are clear.
"In addition, a world class communications network is essential to breakthroughs in all areas of science and technology research, rendering mobile technology doubly important."

Samsung & LG For China Mobile 3G Mobile Phone

Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, ZTE (China), Datang (China) and Motorola (USA) are being mentioned for mobile phone supplier for China Mobile, the biggest Chinese telecommunication service provider, which is processing TD-SCDMA type 3G mobile telecommunication service.

According to Shanghai Daily on 29th, China Mobile, which is processing TD-SCDMA service, is planning to purchase the terminals from 18 manufacturers worldwide with 4 billion wian (490 billion won).

TD-SCDMA Forum managing director Chen Haofei said, "China Mobile invested 6 to 7 billion wian for 3G network structure and is planning to purchase 2 million units of TD-SCDMA type mobile phone. 18 companies including Samsung, LG, Haier, ZTE and TCL will share the order for TD-SCDMA mobile phone, and prior 6 to 7 suppliers will take 60%."

Even though he didn`t specified the suppliers, but Shanghai Daily reported that Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, ZTE, Datang and Motorola were on the list.

Officials of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics said, "We`ve been processing the network interlocking test with sample products. Since Korean products have higher technical power for video call and others, we expect the good result."

Chinese government hasn`t given 3G service license but China Mobile is constructing TD-SCDMA network in 10 cities including Shanghai and Beijing. It seems that the company would process the rapid 3G business with mobile phones as soon as the network is completed and the government gives the permission.

The price of TD-SCDMA mobile phone will be around 2,000 to 3,000 wian and the phone that China Mobile is testing now is 2,500 wian. Nokia has announced that the company would sell TD-SCDMA mobile phone in China in the 1st half of next year.
