Not at CTIA: Nokia unveils 4 phones for the emerging market

At the Growing Together 2008 Conference in South Africa today Nokia released 4 devices. Is that a Prism? For the entry market?! Find out after the jump along with the other 3 devices.

The Nokia 5000 is a 90 Euro device with a 1.3 megapixel camera, 240×320 resolution 65k color 2 inch screen, dual band (one version to be 900/1800, the other 850/1900), 700 mAh battery all in a 11.1 mm thin package scheduled to come out in the second quarter of this year.

The Nokia 2680 Slide will cost 75 Euros when it comes out in the third quarter of this year. It has a VGA camera, again dual band with 2 versions like the Nokia 5000, 128×160 resolution screen, 860 mAh battery and it is a hair under 15 mm thin.



The Nokia 7070 Prism is the cheapest fashion phone I've ever seen out of Nokia coming in at only 50 Euros when it hits stores in the third quarter of this year. You'll get a dual band device, 128×160 resolution screen, 16 mm thin device, but with a ton of style. It looks like a clamshell version of the 7500.


The Nokia 1680 Classic is the 2680 in a monoblock form factor, but it is coming out in Q2.

Nokia 7070 Prism tags itself as the Low Priced Value Phone

Although stylish in looks and form, the Nokia 7070 Prism yet sets its prices down to earth. The Nokia 7070 Prism phone was unveiled along with the other 3 Nokia phones, namely Nokia 5000, Nokia 2680 Slide and Nokia 1680 Classic which come with a low price tag too.

The geometric patterns on its clamshell body set the phone apart from all other mobile phones. The sleek phone although low on price, does not sacrifice on the features.

The phone supports MP3 Ringtones, hands-free speaker and voice recorder functions. The lightweight phone weighs only 78 grams and supports GPRS, email and attractive themes and wallpapers.

Nokia 7070 prism has an internal memory of 11MB and provides a talk-time of 5 hours along with an amazing standby time of 20 days. The phone may miss out on multimedia player or camera functions, but for a basic phone these many features are quite satisfactory. The Nokia 7070 Prism is expected to ship in the third quarter of 2008 and its price is expected to be around US $80 which is just a mere €50.

Worst phones of 2007

We don't believe in name-calling but these were disappointments. Surely.

Nokia 6300

Nokia couldn't stop bragging about the slimness and they weren’t wrong. The 6300 is as slim as it can get. While it scores on design, it’s a big thumbs down performance-wise. The biggest letdown is its battery, which considering it’s from the Nokia umbrella (renowned for its long battery life) makes it an even bigger disappointment. Also, the multimedia is nothing worth mentioning – an un-engaging music player and a not so sharp two-megapixel camera.

Nokia Prism

This was touted as the competitor of the LG Shine. Not even close – which is why this phone finds its way into this list. The half-hearted glossy look, plasticky keys that completely take away from the criss-cross design, and its clashy dirty pink and blue piping running along the side of the phone, make it the complete opposite of a good-looking phone.

i-mate JAQ3

The JAQ3, no doubt, offers a number of improvements over its predecessors but is not up to the standards of what is expected from a Windows Mobile smartphone. Firstly, the call quality is quite poor. Secondly, the mobile applications are a sluggish access. Video playback is not even worth the mention and it does not offer 3G. All in all, not worth spending money on.

Motorola KRZR K1

This was supposed to be an upgraded RAZR. However, it didn't quite match up. Firstly, it didn't sport the Razr's oomphy slimness. In comparison to the RAZR, the KRZR K1 is chubby and taller. The only improvement this one had is that it is not as wide as the RAZR. Feature-wise, it wasn’t too bad, but it didn’t offer anything spectacular either. So while this may not be the worst, it loses extra points for not living up to the expectations.

LG KG920

Surprised to see this phone in the list? Surely, this phone offers an excellent camera but as a mobile phone, it’s far from the best. Firstly, the phone sports a distinct digicam look and while the swivel camera/keypad is uber-cool, the bad key placements and the bulky look and feel combined with a not so engaging user interface, makes this feature-packed camera phone a downer.

Nokia India Launches Prism Collection, Ties-Up with Designer Rocky S

Nokia India has launched its Prism Collection, a modernist collection of sophisticated phones with unconventional designs aimed at style-conscious consumers. The Prism Collection consists of the Nokia 7900 Prism and the Nokia 7500 Prism handsets, which combine individual style and state-of-the-art technology.

Nokia also announced its tie-up with India's leading designer, Rocky S to create an exclusive collection inspired by the Prism collection. This exclusive collection will be showcased at Wills Lifestyle Fashion week on September 7th at Pragati Maidan.

The Nokia Prism range, comprising Nokia 7900 Prism and Nokia 7500 Prism has sharp-angled lines, geometric patterns and graphic light-refracting colors. Asymmetry and geometric lines is Nokia Prism's main design vein, which is reflected in the diamond-cut raised key-mat.

Both handsets, with their sophisticatedly glamorous high-gloss black facades, reflect an independent attitude. The Prism Collection artfully plays with juxtaposition: matte meets shine; light plays with dark; color and cool steel spliced black and sharp lines finish in softly beveled edges. Inspired by progressive architectural feats such as the Munich Stadium, the Bank of China and Prada's shop in Japan, Nokia said the 3-D textural key-mat is as visually appealing as an archly modern Sir Norman Foster building or Chanel's iconic quilting.

The Nokia 7900 Prism juxtaposes its sleek liquorice-black face with a cool anodized aluminum reverse-side, which is intricately coin-stamped and laser-etched in Nokia Prism's signature diamond-cut design. The Nokia 7900 design has the distinction of being amongst the first to feature an Organic LED light display that supports up to 16 million colors and displays light-focused screensaver graphics.

The Nokia 7500 Prism's cool slick black exterior is spliced with a playful burst of bright accent color. This strobe light-like band nods to the burgeoning neon lights of contemporary urban club culture and is interchangeable with a choice of three colors. The Nokia 7500 Prism has a 2 MP camera and can record high quality videos and play music for 8.5 hours.

Nokia today unveiled the Prism collection, its latest range of mobile phones aimed at style-conscious consumers. The two mobile models will be available in the third quarter of 2007 with an estimated retail price of EUR 400 for the Nokia 7900 Prism and EUR 210 for the Nokia 7500 Prism, before taxes and subsidies.

Opposite its sleek, liquorice-black front, the Nokia 7900 Prism comes with an anodized aluminium backcover, which is coin-stamped and laser-etched in Nokia Prism's signature diamond-cut design. Its design is amongst the first to feature an Organic LED main display that supports up to 16 million colors and displays light-focused screensaver graphics. In addition, the Nokia 7900 Prism features a "living wallpaper", which subtly changes throughout the day according to time as well as battery and signal strength, so that each screen is unique.

For greater personalization, the Nokia 7900 Prism offers a gallery choice of 49 illumination colors. Once selected, this color radiates from under the graphic key-mat as well as from the LED display. Lights are also emitted from the top of the phone to signal missed calls and messages.

The Nokia 7900 Prism features dual band 3G technology for fast and easy downloads and browsing, and quad band GSM capability for worldwide connectivity. In addition to a 2 Mpx camera, the Nokia 7900 Prism comes with 1GB of internal memory for lots of pictures, video, contacts and more.

The Nokia 7500 Prism is the Nokia 7900 Prism's quirky sibling. The Nokia 7500 Prism's slick black exterior is spliced with bright, interchangeable color accents. The Nokia 7500 Prism has a 2 Mpx camera and it can record high quality movies. The Nokia 7500 Prism can play music for nine hours and hold up to 1500 songs on an optional 2 GB microSD card.

Nokia Shows Unique 7500 Prism Mobile Phone

Nokia has been known to dabble in some very unique designs every now and again. The 7500 Prism is of course no exception. Although it may bear resemblance to any old candy-bar phone, it does have a slightly unique quality to it when it comes to the paneling.

The criss-cross paneling gives it a sort of diamond edged look and feel to it making it a rather chic looking mobile. The 7500 is equipped with a 2-inch, 16m color screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It’s not just a light weight phone at 82g but a slim one as well with dimensions of - 109 x 43.9 x 14.4 mm.

It has an inbuilt memory of 30MB and uses microSD cards for external memory. The 7500 Prism also has a 2 megapixel camera equipped with a flash. It’s also equipped with EDGE for net connectivity. Bluetooth v2.0 and USB v2.0 are other means by which the 7500 can connect to your PC or other devices. It has an MP3 player and a video player and can read MP3/eAAC+/WMA formats. It also has an FM radio.

The price nor the availability is known yet. But let’s just say it doesn’t seem like it would be too cheap. Let’s hope we see it here though.

Nokia sheds light on Prism fashion phone

Nokia fans worldwide will now be paying closer attention to the vendor from all angles, following the unveiling of its latest handset, the 7500 Prism, at a fashion show in China this week.

The "avant-garde" handset features a two-megapixel camera; DVD quality video playback; support for a range of music formats, including MP3 and WMA; an on-board FM radio; and includes a 30MB internal storage capacity, with a Micro SD memory card slot - Nokia's bundling a 512MB card with the phone.

On the connectivity side, the 7500 includes Bluetooth 2.0 and supports USB 2.0. It is also compatible with Edge and GPRS, and it's a tri-band GSM device. The display is 240 x 320 pixels and capable of displaying 16.7m colours.

The specs may not be startling, but the 7500's looks are, and that keypad, with its diamond-shaped keys, will certainly draw attention. The basic colour is black, with a choice of blue, green or ruby highlights.

It will certainly appeal to the fashionista crowd with its size and weight: it measures 10.9 x 4.4 x 1.4cm and weighs 82g.

The handset is expected to be made available first during Q3 in China, but pricing has yet to be set. Sadly, there's no wo word on a European release date.
