Nokia 5000 Camera Phone is Green with Envy

The newly announced Nokia 5000 candybar phone has the same appearance as so many other multimedia-centered phones in the Nokia 5000-series. As with handsets like the 5300, the Nokia 5000 is mostly white and black, with the exception of a color accent flanking the display on either side. In this case, they've gone with green.

Interestingly, the Nokia 5000 does not have the XpressMusic controls on their flanking green strips, opting instead for a more generic keypad layout. There are no dedicated music controls to speak of on this phone. Key features include a 1.3 megapixel camera, QVGA display, FM radio, MP3 ringtones, Bluetooth, and GPRS.

The good news is that the Nokia 5000 will be very affordable, selling for a mere 90 Euro ($140) when it hits retailers in Q2 2008.

Video Review: Samsung Giorgio Armani Touchscreen Phone

It's easy enough to say that these phones are attacking the same chunk of the market as the Apple iPhone, but when you consider products like the LG Prada and the Samsung Armani, the Korean variants have definitely taken a more upscale approach by partnering with high-end fashion companies. Not to say that the functionality is equally upscale.

The Samsung Giorgio Armani phone has a form factor and size that is very similar to the LG Prada. Experience the Croix-inspired user interface second hand through the video below, discovering the camera is mediocre at best and the music player -- while sounding great -- isn't the easiest to use. In fact, you'll find that the software is very similar to mid-range Samsung phones like the U600 and U700. The brushed aluminum back, however, is a little more prestigious.

A Nokia Camera Phone That’s More Like a Camera With a Phone Attached

It didn’t take long for camera phones to grow up. Only a few years ago, the best ones took pictures with 1 megapixel of resolution. Now Nokia is coming out with the N82, a phone that takes 5-megapixel photos, higher quality than some point-and-shoot cameras.

The diminutive N82, weighing about four ounces, is a successor to the N80 and includes a flash and Carl Zeiss optics. It has 2 gigabytes of storage space for photos and can display pictures and video on a television using an optional TV-out dock. It will be available early next year for about $630 at nseries.com.

Photos can be sent to the expandable internal memory or straight to almost any photo-sharing site over cellular or Wi-Fi networks. It also plays back MP3 music files and most video files and even has a built-in FM tuner.

Not enough? The N82 also has a position sensor — it will flip the screen when you want to show pictures in landscape mode — and supports e-mail and even voice-over-Internet calls. Try to get your old camera phone to do that.

The Snooze mobile phone concept is also an alarm clock

The latest mobile phone concept to hit the internets is a hybrid mobile phone/alarm clock jobby. If you’ve ever wished your mobile phone could be more like your alarm clock, then the Snooze mobile phone concept is for you. On the front-side, the Snooze looks like a normal mobile phone - keypad and screen in a candybar setup. Flip the Snooze over, however, and you’ve got an alarm clock with convenient snooze button and red-LED clock display.

We can’t imagine why anyone would want a mobile phones that acts and looks more like an alarm clock than an actual phone, but the Snooze concept does highlight the need to make the alarm-clock function on many phones more accessible and convenient. It’d be nice to roll-over in the middle of the night and easily see just how much sleep we’ve lost - but not if the solution looks like this

Samsung and Bang & Olufsen launch Serenata Music Phone

Samsung has joined hands with Danish company Bang & Olufsen to introduce Serenata, which claims to be a true iPhone competitor.


Bang & Olufsen is a designer and manufacturer of stylish high-end home electronic products.
The novel looking Serenata MP3 phone includes 4GB of music storage and is designed for one-handed use, the click-wheel is used for phone dialing, writing texts and emails and accessing the music lists. All primary functions on the phone are controlled by the click-wheel.

A 2.26-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) touchscreen is placed below the click-wheel. The LCD screen displays menus and album artwork. The Serenata is compatible with GSM Networks (900,1800, and 1900 MHz bands) and HSDPA service.

You just need to press one button placed in the center of the click-wheel to instantly shift from phone mode to music mode. The other music features included in the Serenata phone are:

• HSDPA connectivity for rapid downloads
• 4GB of flash memory
• Built-in hi-fi speakers
• Bass system designed to reproduce the sound quality and functionality of your home music system
• PureMusic function, which allows users to listen to music without interruptions while calls are received by the answering device
• Ability to handle playback in compressed formats including MP3, WMA, and AAC
  Good battery life to sustain amplified music for up to 5 hours through the speaker or 13 hours through a headset

As mentioned before, the Samsung and Bang & Olufsen Serenata phone is sure to pose some great challenge to Apple’s iPhone. What’s more, both the phones will be shipped in Europe by October-end, which is around the same time that the iPhone could release there.

Bundled with the Serenata is a dock to charge the phone, giving line-out audio for speakers and a USB connection that syncs files and music with both Macs and Windows. Reportedly, Bang & Olufsen could also include an extra software to transfer music from iTunes.

No details on the pricing of the Samsung and Bang & Olufsen’s Serenata phone have been revealed yet.

Samsung's Armani phone details have leaked out

Armani phone (SGH-P520) from Samsung Mobile has shown up during the Dutch's mobile phone distribution event. This is Samsung's first mobile phone developed with an international fashion leading brand. I assume this mobile phone was developed without plans to join Armani in the first place.

However, this changed because LG came out with the Prada Phone and received a great deal of attention and feedback from consumers all over the world, becoming one of the best mobile phones in 2006. This situation has made Samsung find a way to compete against LG to keep its high-end market customers.

Now, let's check out the some of specs that have been revealed during the event. It has a touchscreen in the front with a Send and End (Power) key as the only buttons available. Thickness is only 8.9mm and Croix touchscreen UI is included. It's Samsung's own touch UI.

The Armani phone has a 3-megapixel camera and 50MB built-in memory with a microSD expandable slot. It also supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

Finally, the price mentioned is about 400 euros for the Russian and European markets. The Armani phone will available at end of this year.

I hope Samsung can also do a great job with the Armani phone to keep its high-end markets in the international arena. But the price doesn't seem high enough compared with the Prada Phone, isn't it?

Nokia 5700 Xpress Music phone, Nokia Bluetooth BH-501 headset review!

VOICE over internet protocol telephony has helped thousands of people shave money from their fixed-line phone bills since appearing on the scene some four years ago. Now it's poised to do the same to mobiles.

The Nokia 5700 Xpress Music phone utilizes a twisting base design that lets you access the music player, camera, and regular numeric keypad just by twisting the lower portion. What’s great is that when this is done, the corresponding application will launch based upon what the phone thinks you want to do. Obviously, when you turn the base to the music keys side, it knows you want to play some tunes. The same thing goes for the camera — it knows that you want to take a flick. Running on the ever-so-popular Symbian S60 OS, any previous Nokia user will be able to pick this thing up and get going. As a true music phone at heart, the Nokia 5700 Xpress Music phone offers some of the loudest darn speakers I’ve heard on a mobile phone.

Like, really really loud. Pretty clear too. It supports WM DRM and even sports a dedicated audio chip to make sure you don’t miss a beat, literally. Another very nice aspect is that the music will fade down when receiving a call, and fade back in when the call has ended, from right where you left off. Go Nokia! In addition to the music playback, using the speakerphone function when on a voice call left us real impressed…it was incredible. Nokia is generous enough to include a pair of stereo headsets with the phone. If accessible, we recommend taking advantage of the built in 3.5mm headset jack and using a pair of your own favorite headphones incase the free ones just don’t cut it.

Call quality is just what you would expect from Nokia, which offers some of the best RF performance-driven phones out there. The actual layout of the keys and buttons on the phone needs a little getting used to, but we found it very easy to use after a short amount of time. Also, the music keys could have been a little more responsive by offering more tactile feedback, but it didn’t affect our ability to pause, play, and skip through music without a hitch. The joystick used for navigating the device wasn’t tedious, but we feel that it could have been a bit better. Packed with a two megapixel camera, you’re able to twist, turn, snap, and send pictures off really quickly. We would have loved to see Flickr integration here like with the N-series, though. We know, we know, N-series only. Overall, the camera quality is good, yet a software update might be helpful in fixing some of the inconsistencies in the various photos we took. You’ll find full A2DP Bluetooth support inside, and that brings us to the second part of the review: the Nokia Bluetooth BH-501 headset.

The unit we reviewed was white and grey, and in our opinion, a little less appealing than the black version of the same headset. Colors aside, the headset performed pretty well when given music duties. Music came in crystal clear, and even though bass reproduction wasn’t outstanding, it was passable to say the least. One great thing about the headset is that it uses the same standard Nokia chargers that most of their current phones do (i.e. the Nokia 5700).

On the contrary, we found the headset is a little uncomfortable to wear, and we looked a little weird when walking down downtown Manhattan (yes we got the "WTF" stares…). Then again, the sole purposes of a stereo Bluetooth headset are to listen to music as well as make and receive calls. There were no complaints from our test victims regarding voice quality when using the Bluetooth headset.

We’re liking the handset and headset overall. The Nokia 5700 takes a little getting used to and we wish some of the buttons were a little more responsive, but we wouldn’t be doing a disservice recommending this phone to a music lover. Let’s give them 3 and a half BGs individually.

What Does a $9,800 Windows Mobile Phone Look Like?

Made from African Blackwood with real gold buttons, the Gresso phones, dubbed the Avantgarde Collection, will be available in Q4 of 2007. Both phones, the Luna and Sol, will be equipped with WM6 Standard, a QVGA screen, Bluetooth, and Roman numerals on the keypad instead of normal numbers like we're all used to. In terms of price, the one seen below at top will sell for an easy 5000 Euro (that's about USD$6800), and the one on the bottom, which is laden with more gold, costs 7000 Euro (that's about USD$9800). The release doesn't mention whether the device will have 3G capability or any other interesting feature that would justify the astronomical price...but I'm sure for more than the cost of a dozen (or two) Windows Mobile devices, it'll pack at least UMTS, right?

Samsung T729 Slider Phone Soon to be Announced by T-Mobile

T-Mobile has begun advertising the new Samsung T729 SuperType Slider mobile phone. T-Mobile will soon release the Blast a.k.a T729.


The features of the Samsung T729 are 1.3 megapixel camera with video capturing capabilities, Bluetooth and will support BlackBerry connect. It also has TFT color display with up to 262k colors, 11MB of internal memory with a microSD cards slot. It delivers a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels.

Samsung T729 also comes with a phonebook capacity of up to 1000 entries and 800 mAH Lithium-Ion battery, which offers talk time up to 5 hours and 8.3 days of standby time. It also provides 850 MHz; 900 MHz; 1800 MHz; 1900 MHz band.

Additionally, it also offers instant messaging, speakerphone, consumer e-mail, SMS, MMS, picture caller ID, voice notes, Hi-Fi ringers, wallpapers, games, alarm clock and calculator.

At 2.8 ounces, it measures 4.16 x 2.04 x 0.5 inches. The slider phone is the follow up of the T19 clamshell. Price and launch date is not yet fixed.

Google Phone a Reality Again? New Prototype Surfaces

Things had been quiet for a while on the Google Phone rumors front, but it looks like talk about the device has surfaced again. Only, this time, the concept is looking much less like a rumor and more like an inevitability.

Reports have been surfacing which indicate that Google has been showing off a prototype mobile phone to different carriers. According to an article published Thursday in the Wall Street Journal, Google is showing the the prototype around while continuing to hone and improve the product to offer a browsing and internet experience superior to what is currently available.

Additionally, the Google phone will reportedly offer free service. Instead of relying on a large price tag and/or monthly fees, the Google phone will supposedly generate revenue for Google via commercial advertising dollars. Specifically, in exchange for free calling, Google phone users will be served advertisements.

Google is particularly excited about the possibilities of mobile phone advertising. As a result of the individual nature of mobile phone ownership, along with on-board mobile phone technology such as GPS, the ability to personalize the advertisements well exceed current levels of sophistication.

Based on current information, it seems like there may be Google phones, rather than just a single Google phone, with Google determining a set of specifications that manufacturers must meet in order to create and market a Google approved phone.

Still, information is scarce, but more details seem to be coming to light.

Samsung SGH-F110 adidas sports phone

Samsung is about to launch a sports phone co-branded with adidas , with a UK release confirmed by a Samsung spokesperson.

The Samsung SGH-F110 adidas phone was first reported by a German website . But a Samsung spokesperson in the UK has told Tech.co.uk that the co-branded adidas phone is also scheduled for a UK launch.

The Samsung SGH-F110 is a sports-featured mobile with personal trainer applications such as a pedometer, heart beat monitor, calories-counter and so on. There's also reported to be a voice coach feature to spur users on during their work out.

The F110 will include a 2-megapixel camera, multi-format MP3 player (with playlist option to match your workout), FM radio and MicroSD memory card support. The F110 is a quad-band EDGE enabled phone, with USB 2.0 and stereo Bluetooth connectivity.

The F110 has a similar slimline dual-front design to the recently released Samsung SGH-F300. Although Samsung has confirmed a UK release for the Samsung SGH-F110, no specific date or price details have yet been released.

Samsung Adds Second 5MP Camera Phone

After waiting a relative age to bust out its first five megapixel camera phone, Samsung is well and truly over its coyness.

Just two weeks after it launched the SGH-G600 the company has stepped up to the mark once again with the SGH-G800. Like the G600, it shoots at up to five megapixels but also throws in a 3x optical zoom and proper Xenon flash enabling it to compete not just with the likes of Sony Ericsson's K850i but even dedicated slim and light digicams too.

Away from its headlining feature this slider is no slouch either with a large 2.4in QVGA screen, HSDPA connectivity, Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0 and a microSD expansion slot. In fact, the only obvious downside of the device is that all this functionality has had a detrimental effect on its waistline with its 16.8mm width fatter than a lot of handsets these days.

That said, the G800 looks a cracking handset for those who like their fashion phones to do a lot more than just look pretty and given that you'll no longer need to carry round a digital camera for basic point and shoot stuff there's likely to be extra space in your pockets anyway...

Unsurprisingly, Sammy hasn't been keen to give a release date for the G800 yet, but I'd be surprised if it didn't start pleasing snap-happy customers before the end of the year.

Nokia Shows Unique 7500 Prism Mobile Phone

Nokia has been known to dabble in some very unique designs every now and again. The 7500 Prism is of course no exception. Although it may bear resemblance to any old candy-bar phone, it does have a slightly unique quality to it when it comes to the paneling.

The criss-cross paneling gives it a sort of diamond edged look and feel to it making it a rather chic looking mobile. The 7500 is equipped with a 2-inch, 16m color screen with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It’s not just a light weight phone at 82g but a slim one as well with dimensions of - 109 x 43.9 x 14.4 mm.

It has an inbuilt memory of 30MB and uses microSD cards for external memory. The 7500 Prism also has a 2 megapixel camera equipped with a flash. It’s also equipped with EDGE for net connectivity. Bluetooth v2.0 and USB v2.0 are other means by which the 7500 can connect to your PC or other devices. It has an MP3 player and a video player and can read MP3/eAAC+/WMA formats. It also has an FM radio.

The price nor the availability is known yet. But let’s just say it doesn’t seem like it would be too cheap. Let’s hope we see it here though.

iSony Ericsson concept phone

What would happen in the unlikely case of Apple and Sony Ericsson merging into a single company? Well, for one thing we could expect phones that look like the one pictured above - they don’t call this concept “iSony Ericsson” for nothing. As you can see, this device uses the familiar iPod interface along with the Sony Ericsson phone buttons and speakers to create something unique, weird or crazy — depends how you like to see it. I find it looks quite interesting. What do you think?

HTC P6300 Windows Mobile PDA phone

The much-written-about HTC Touch has been the subject of many a heated debate among followers of the smartphone industry in recent weeks. Some love it, others (including our very own esteemed editor) are not so keen.

But one thing is clear: it is a departure for the firm that doesn't quite work, and it is one that certainly won't do what it was originally intended to do - which was run the Apple iPhone juggernaut off the road, or at least give it a bloody nose. And, on top of all that, overlaying a simple touch-driven interface on top of Windows Mobile isn't the revolution we were hoping for.

The new P6300 smartphone (around £400 SIM-free) represents a return to business-as-usual for HTC and anyone expecting iPhone-rivalling fancy pants features will be sorely disappointed.
This is, pure and simple, a Windows Mobile-based PDA phone with no fancy extras, aimed at business or corporate users.

And that's exactly what it looks like when you pull it out of the box for the very first time. It's grey and unassuming, more accountant on an audit than advertising executive on a brainstorming session. It doesn't look particularly cool, but it goes about its business in an understated sort of way.

The front is dominated by a large 3.5in, 240 x 320 resolution screen surrounded with some sensibly arranged and simple buttons. Above it are shortcut keys for messaging and Internet applications. Below it are the usual smart phone controls for picking-up and hanging-up calls, while a pair of soft buttons and a Windows Start button flank a D-pad, used for navigating Windows Mobile's often complicated and cluttered screens.

The edges of the P6300 are, thankfully, just as uncluttered. On the right hand edge you'll find the stylus stowed away and a shutter button for the two megapixel camera. On the left is a rocker for the volume plus a key for accessing the device's voice control centre. This can be used to launch applications or phone speed dial contacts and it works really well - as long as you don't mind people staring at you in the street as though you've just escaped from Broadmoor.

On the top edge is the power switch and an SD memory card slot and at the bottom, a rather odd-looking hybrid mini-USB socket – used for syncing, charging and for connecting the proprietary hands-free headset supplied in the box. And though confusingly it looks different to a standard mini-USB socket, this 'ExtUSB' socket will in fact still take standard cables, so you can use your power cable in the car, or spare USB lead at your desk in the office to charge it.

And, while I'm on the subject of box contents, the P6300 comes with a USB wall wart charger and a quality belt clip case as well.

Sony Ericsson Walkman Phone Rated Best in Class

Strategy Analytics, a research firm, rated the Sony Ericsson W800i ‘Walkman’ phone as the best in class cellular music device in the USA, ahead of the Motorola E1 ‘ROKR’ and Samsung A970. The SEMC W800i achieved Best in Class status based upon superior style appeal and an above average rating for music feature quality.
The Motorola E1 ‘ROKR ‘ achieved the highest rating for usability, but failed to impress in terms of style and feature quality. At 144 grams, the panel considered the Samsung A970 too large for primary feature phone positioning. The Motorola device achieved an 8pt advantage over its rivals for Application Usability. Current iTunes users in particular indicated strong usability preference for the ROKR indicating that the iTunes interface is generating loyalty/preference dynamics similar to branded Operating Systems.
