NOKIA N81 8GB

N81 is an effort to bring about the popular N-Gage/N-Gage QD phones which were discontinued by Nokia some time back. It combines the best gaming experience along with good multimedia capabilities.

Design
The phone uses a slider mechanism but it is quite bulky without the slider open. A complete plastic body gives it a light feel, but takes away the ergonomic factor. The screen is 2.8inches big which is ideal for the gaming section for which this phone is made for. A 5-way Dpad clutters the phone area and is used mainly in gaming. The phone has the volume keys and camera keys on the right and the speaker quality is very nice, which suits the phone’s requirements.

Gaming and Multimedia
The phone scores well in gaming department, with the games available for play in landscape mode, and the N81 seems like a PSP in your hand. The phone has 8GB of memory, which is more than sufficient for the storage of games and multimedia data. The sound quality is the best that Nokia has to offer, but it still cannot match Walkman phones. Video viewing is a nice experience on this one, because of the 2.8 inch screen, but occasional framing can be observed even when the memory is empty. It has only a 2MP camera, whereas a 3.2MP should have been the ideal choice.

Conclusion
Overall a good phone, it could have done better if a better camera had been provided.

Nokia N81 viral ad has a countdown timer for August 29th at 09:00 in the UK

This is
all we know about the N81 so far (the picture above is the best we have):
  • S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1
  • 8 GB of memory built in
  • 16 million color 320×240 resolution screen
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • WiFi and Bluetooth with A2DP support
  • 2100 MHz 3G and Quadband GSM/EDGE
  • 102 x 50 x 17.9 mm; 140 grams (these are sketchy)

Matt Miller linked to Kevin Tofel who has information about a viral ad campaign going on right now at http://www.070829.com/

The trick to the site is to hit the pause button in the center of the screen once the shapes form a phone. After you watch a few very weird, hopefully not nightmare inducing videos, you’re presented with a countdown clock:

It counts down to August 29th at 09:00 in the UK. Why the UK? That is where Fortune Magazine says Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will be, at the Ministry of Sound Dance Club.

Who the hell goes to a club at 09:00 is beyond me, but this will be a very hot device. This viral site also has an RSS feed you might want to add to your reader.

Here is an idea for the marketing people at S60, why not give away a certain number of devices to the people at the club that night?

Specs Out on 8GB Nokia N81

That Nokia N81 that was a hot rumor is now a reality, with specs being released for all to see.

For starters, it has 8GB of memory, which is a bit mind-blowing for a device that small. It's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-friendly, and its talk and surf capabilities incorporate 3G, EDGE, and HSDPA.

The N81 has two cameras, one 2-megapixel and the other CIF. It has a music player, which can play up to 12.5 hours before the battery dies. It has dedicated music and gaming keys, which suggests one-touch. It also has a navigation wheel.

If you think this sounds a lot like a slider version of the N91, you're probably right. But it's another new Nokia advancement, which is always good for a bout of excitement around the globe.
