Samsung F490 Hands-on video

In case you’ve missed it, the Samsung F490 is the keyboardless cousin to the Croix or F700v. It has a 5MP camera, a 3.2” touchscreen with some sort of pseudo haptic feedback system, and it has the same UI as the Croix.

It has HSDPA at 3.6Mbps, UMTS, and EDGE. On the same wireless side, it also has Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP+ and AVRCP, but no WiFi.

Other than that it has some fairly respectable media players inside, a nice smooth, shiny finish, and a light weight of 102 grams. Basically, it’s a pretty nice phone, don’t forget to check out the video.

Samsung F490 reviewed: pales against iPhone & Viewty

Three days into the launch month for the Samsung F490 - the keyboard-less sibling of the F700 - and already Mobile-review have their opinion of the device available. As ever, they’ve done a comprehensive job with screenshots and coverage of pretty much all the F490’s features, comparing it to rivals from LG and, of course, Apple. Review author Eldar Murtazin establishes early on that the Samsung’s main rival is the LG KU990 Viewty, but the iPhone inevitably makes a comeback in his conclusion.

So what’s the score on the F490? Samsung will be disappointed to see that Eldar thinks it fairly middling - a niche product, at best, with predicted difficulty finding sales when compared with the Viewty’s more feature-packed camera (the LG phone has autofocus while the F490 does not), and coming out poorly when compared to the iPhone’s multimedia functionality.

“The F490 will enjoy reasonable sales on the market, but with no hopes for becoming a best seller, though. Being pushed by the LG Viewty and having to cope with the Apple iPhone (even though it is not official in most regions), the F490 won’t be able to unfold its full potential. So, the best way to look at it is one of the first Croix OS based phones – the impending solutions are going to be much more interesting” Eldar Murtazin, Mobile-review.com

Samsung F490 Smartphone Tackles iPhone Market

Everyone at Samsung probably hates it when people compare their devices to the Apple iPhone, but when you officially announce a cell phone like the Samsung F490, the comparisons are inevitable. Previously, we caught a sneak peek at this handset through a random Ukrainian source, but at the time, nothing was set in stone nor did we have any idea whether this device was even for real.

Samsung has now officially revealed the Samsung F490 and, yet again, comparisons to the iPhone are popping up. The F490 features a large 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen display that covers nearly the entire front face of the phone. Underneath are a few touch sensitive controls for basic stuff like initiating and ending a call. The display can also be used in landscape for video watching.

Core features include 130MB of internal memory, Bluetooth, USB, tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and HSDPA. Look for the Samsung F490 to drop in Europe next month for $780.

Video-ified: A Closer Look at Samsung F720 DuoS and F490

Don't you hate it when the public relations people sneak you a peek at their latest products, only to leave you sorely dissatisfied with the amount of information they provide? That's exactly what happened recently with a couple of Samsung cell phones, but our video-watching needs can now finally be satiated.

You may remember the Samsung P720 DuoS and the Samsung F490 touchscreen phones from when they were originally introduced, but you can now get a better look at the devices through a video provided by Mobile-Notes. The P720 DuoS is a classy looking phone with a leather wallet cover. It's the natural progression of Samsung's calculator phones, having gained dual SIM slots (hence the DuoS) and a touchscreen display.

The Samsung F490, by contrast, looks more like an even glossier, even more touch-sensitive version of the Apple iPhone. Live photos of the near button-less wonder really get you to appreciate just how shiny that silver casing is. But enough yak. Let's get on with the video. Oh, and there's bonus coverage of the F700 in there too.
