Review: Samsung Armani P520

Samsung Armani review
Fashion is more than the way we dress, as Giorgio Armani states. To meet the growing demands for consumer electronics, Giorgio Armani developed aStylish Giorgio Armani mobile phone n advanced mobile phone, in cooperation with Samsung, with a unique appearance, also known as the Samsung P520. Luxury, elegance and simplicity are Giorgio Armani's key features and they also characterize the Samsung P520. Samsung's experience in the field of user-friendliness certainly shows with this device. The enhanced digital camera, MP3 player, astonishing graphic effects and famous brand name, make the Giorgio Armani cell phone a desired gadget, especially for the younger generation.

Samsung Armani retail box
Not only is the Giorgio Armani mobile phone a stylish device, it is also delivered in style. The black box has a silky feel, like the cover of the user’s guide. A leather pouch that folds out comes with the phone to protect it. When you shut the cover, it shuts down the cell phone. You can also choose to use the included pouch made from soft material. Naturally a battery charger, USB cable, earphone and software CDs are included in the box. An original addition is the soft cleansing cloth, marked with the Armani logo, which serves to wipe the Samsung P520 clean.
Samsung P520 cell phone design
The Samsung P520 has a businesslike and classy appearance also thanks to its durable, black housing carrying the Giorgio Armani logo. The dimensions of 3.5x 2.1x0.4 inches make the cell phone extremely compact and the full touchscreen enables optimum management. Thanks to its compact design you hardly notice the cell phone in your trouser pocket. On the front there are only two buttons available; the 'numeric key pad' and the 'on/off' or 'close menu' key. At first the Armani cell phone reminded me of a smartphone, also because of the visible agenda in standby mode, but as far as functionality is concerned, the Samsung P520 is a regular mobile phone. Buttons to operate the digital camera and to key lock are placed on the right side of the phone while the volume buttons can be found on the left side. Logically, the digital camera is found on the back of the Giorgio Armani cell phone.

Samsung P520 Touchscreen
The 2.6 inch 262,144 pixels colour TFT touchscreen dominates the front of the Samsung P520 Giorgio Armani phone. It is a heat-sensitive monitor functioning without stylus. The colours are clearly reproduced and while photographing, details are clearly visible thanks to the large monitor. The special sunlight mode enables you to see what's rendered on the screen even in bright sunlight without having to move into the shade in order to decipher your received text message. In general the monitor responses fast, but the model we tested seemed to have a less sensitive right side compared to the rest of the screen, which made it hard to select the scrollbar. At times I also had trouble touching the right buttons; although this might be a matter of simply growing accustomed to it and aiming well.

Samsung P520 phone menu
Straight from the standby mode you can switch the Giorgio Armani mobile phone to the silent mode and get access to the call screen or the main menu. The main menu has its very own style in the colours yellow and black. Two bars, a horizontal and vertical one, lead you along twelve icons, divided in a 3x4 grid. As we have come to appreciate from Samsung, all the menus and the submenus are logically arranged and everything is easy to find. Some menus have a scrollbar at their disposal but it is also possible to 'slide' your finger from the centre to the bottom of the screen to scroll through the menu. The quick access buttons that offer direct access to the call log, MP3 player, messages and contacts are accessible from every menu by pressing the small square.
Samsung Armani P520 digital camera
The Giorgio Armani handset has been equipped with a 3.15 Megapixel digital camera featuring a LED flash and a 4x digital zoom. In well-lit situations this camera captures sharp, bright pictures. On the computer screen, the red tones are a tad too present at times. Thanks to the mobile phone's large TFT screen you can focus on many details while shooting, which gives a good overview of the final result. The camera's basic settings such as white balance, resolution, effects and frames can be adjusted through the quick menu. In the main screen, you can directly activate or deactivate the flash and self-timer. Moving vertically over the screen with your finger, will activate the zoom function, whilst a horizontal movement results in adjusting the light intensity, presuming you hold the phone horizontally for a landscape picture. In 'camera settings' you can adjust quality, light metering and ISO values. In short, the Giorgio Armani mobile phone has many built-in possibilities 3 Megapixel digital camera that allow you to take nice pictures.

Giorgio Armani MP3 player
The Samsung P520's MP3 player features the same graphics as the main menu and the basic functions can be operated by two bars. When you slide the vertical bar, you wind or rewind a song. To adjust the volume you have to slide the horizontal bar. On the crossing of the two bars the play/pause button is positioned. This neat, original reproduction makes it a joy to arrange your music. Furthermore you can repeat songs automatically, create playlists and sort music to artist, album genre and composer. The MP3 player remains active in standby mode providing you set this mode in the play setting menu. The headset as well as the loudspeaker produces a reasonable sound.

Samsung P520 mobile phone functions
With the aid of the common agenda you can manage your dates, remember birthdays and tick off tasks. The four available alarms and an alarm clock give you no excuse anymore to oversleep, unless of course you press 'OK' instead of 'Snooze' when the alarm wakes you. That way, I can assure you, the alarm will not go off again! In addition, the Samsung P520 offers a timer, notebook, world time and a calculator. The speech recorder has the same beautiful graphic effects as the main menu and the MP3 player. A unique extra feature is the possibility to view Excel, Word and PDF files through the File viewer. You can also use the 'find' function to find certain specific words inside a document. Moreover, the Bluetooth connection lets you connect directly to an external Bluetooth printer.

Video Review: Samsung Giorgio Armani Touchscreen Phone

It's easy enough to say that these phones are attacking the same chunk of the market as the Apple iPhone, but when you consider products like the LG Prada and the Samsung Armani, the Korean variants have definitely taken a more upscale approach by partnering with high-end fashion companies. Not to say that the functionality is equally upscale.

The Samsung Giorgio Armani phone has a form factor and size that is very similar to the LG Prada. Experience the Croix-inspired user interface second hand through the video below, discovering the camera is mediocre at best and the music player -- while sounding great -- isn't the easiest to use. In fact, you'll find that the software is very similar to mid-range Samsung phones like the U600 and U700. The brushed aluminum back, however, is a little more prestigious.

So, what's the final verdict on the Samsung Armani phone? You'll have to watch the vid from PhoneArena to find out.

Armani-Samsung handset to hit Middle East

The first jointly developed mobile phone under the strategic alliance between Samsung and Giorgio Armani will hit the shelves in the Middle East in December and an Armani/Casa-Samsung luxury LCD television will be unveiled globally in January, an Samsung official said.

The SGH P520 handset was unveiled at the Milan Women's Fashion Week on September 24.

"Giorgio Armani will create the design aesthetic and Samsung will provide the cutting-edge technology and function," said Sandeep Saihgal, general manager, telecom division, Samsung Mena.

Portable products will be developed for both the signature Giorgio Armani and fashion-forward Emporio Armani lifestyles, while home electronics products will be developed as part of the Armani/Casa home interiors lifestyle.

The new products will be distributed in upscale consumer electronics stores and through Giorgio Armani's direct controlled retail network,"

The credit-card sized handset, which is just 10.5 mm thick, sports a full touch-screen user interface and provides vibration feedback to users as they touch each of the on-screen icons. It weighs just 85 gm and will be a collector's item.

"It targets is a discerning stylish man or woman, who is looking for a mobile phone that reflects his/her own sophistication, style and elegance," Saihgal said.

He said both Samsung and Armani were considering a similar type of collaboration for the development of design-led portable and home consumer technology products. An initial exploratory meeting between executives of the two companies took place in Seoul in early 2006.
"The idea to bring together one of the world's iconic fashion designers with one of the world's leading consumer technology is a powerful one," Saihgal said.

This is not the first time designers have formed alliance with handset vendors. Dolce & Gabbana has teamed up with Motorola for a gold-coloured version of the RAZR mobile phone model and Prada teamed up with South Korea's LG Electronics to launch Prada handsets.

Samsung's Armani phone details have leaked out

Armani phone (SGH-P520) from Samsung Mobile has shown up during the Dutch's mobile phone distribution event. This is Samsung's first mobile phone developed with an international fashion leading brand. I assume this mobile phone was developed without plans to join Armani in the first place.
However, this changed because LG came out with the Prada Phone and received a great deal of attention and feedback from consumers all over the world, becoming one of the best mobile phones in 2006. This situation has made Samsung find a way to compete against LG to keep its high-end market customers.
Now, let's check out the some of specs that have been revealed during the event. It has a touchscreen in the front with a Send and End (Power) key as the only buttons available. Thickness is only 8.9mm and Croix touchscreen UI is included. It's Samsung's own touch UI.
The Armani phone has a 3-megapixel camera and 50MB built-in memory with a microSD expandable slot. It also supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
Finally, the price mentioned is about 400 euros for the Russian and European markets. The Armani phone will available at end of this year.
I hope Samsung can also do a great job with the Armani phone to keep its high-end markets in the international arena. But the price doesn't seem high enough compared with the Prada Phone, isn't it?
