Microsoft makes Windows Live available for Windows Mobile

Microsoft loves to confuse the hell out of mobile enthusiasts with their multitude of mobile services. If it isn't Windows Live, it's Live Search, or it could be non-application Live Search web search. Windows Live is the brand name under which Microsoft is developing its web services and application. A unified "Live" web service platform would be nice, but that's just a bit beyond Redmond at this point.

The Windows Live application for all Windows Mobile devices is now available and should make your smartphone play nice with push email, contacts synchronization, Windows Live Hotmail, Live Spaces, and Live Search. With Live Search for Windows Mobile also gives the Windows Mobile user access to weather, gas prices, directions, traffic and GPS integration. Windows Live Search for Windows Mobile also lets you put a Live Search box on your Today Screen, so that's a definite plus.

Head on over to the Microsoft download site with your mobile browser (whichever you might be using) and grab Microsoft Windows Live for yourself.
We know, this whole "Live" business with Windows Mobile is all too confusing to deal with. Don't bother trying to figure out with Microsoft is doing and just go
download Windows Live.

Win a Zune, for free

Yeah, we’re not huge fans of Microsoft’s Zune personal media player, but there are certainly worse options out there, and the prospect of pulling one in for free is certainly pretty appealing. Microsoft is giving away a Zune every day until the 31st of March. One lucky winner per day will receive a brand new 8GB Zune, courtesy of the generous folks over at Windows Live. The process is outlined via the link at the bottom of the page, but the basic gist involves logging into your Hotmail or Windows Live account via your mobile phone and sending a quick email. Doesn’t get much easier than that, does it?

Nokia gets Windows Live

Latest hook up with Microsoft will get your mobile playing nice with all your web stuff.

Nokia and Microsoft’s burgeoning relationship just got serious. The Big M and Finland’s favourites have announced that they’re to launch Windows Live specifically for S60 cells.
This means if you’ve got an N95, N73, N76 or N80 in your pocket, you can get downloading and have get Hotmail, Messenger, Contacts and Spaces on the go.

It’ll kick off as a free trial, but if you like what you see, then there’ll be a monthly fee to contend with.

Microsoft obviously fancies itself as a bit of a mobile player, and they’re already pretty cosy with Nokia. Their plans to bring PlayReady DRM across all their devices has the potential to slap down Apple’s hopes for world domination.

We’ve already primed our N76 with the new software, which you can check out in our gallery. If you like what you see, then boost on over to www.nokia.com/windowslive.

Microsoft fixes Windows Mobile synch problem

Microsoft Corp. has fixed a problem that made it difficult for users of the most recent Windows Mobile devices to synch with PCs running Vista.

Tuesday night, Microsoft launched Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1, an upgraded version of the software that lets Windows Mobile users manage their phones.

The Mobile Device Center was designed for Vista users as a replacement for ActiveSync, the software that let's PC users synchronize content like calendar items and transfer content like music between their Windows Mobile phones and PCs.

However, early users of Windows Mobile 6.0 devices have complained that the Device Center doesn't synch files at all or in some cases it may lose updates to files.

"In the past, some users reported installation and compatibility issues with Windows Mobile Device Center [WMDC]," said John Starkweather, group product manager in Microsoft's mobile communications group, in an e-mail statement. "We have released an update to WMDC intended to improve the overall user experience."

Mobile Device Center 6.1 supports file synchronization for all Windows Mobile 6.0 devices including smartphones, according to Mel Sampat, a program manager for Windows Mobile who blogged about the new version.

Other new features in Device Center include synching HTML-formatted mail, allowing data connections on the phone when connected to the PC and automatic device authentication.

Microsoft also announced that in the third quarter Windows Mobile will be compatible with Office 2007. That means users of Windows Mobile 6 Professional and Standard devices as well as Mobile 5.0 touch screen phones will get a free update that will let them read and edit Office 2007 Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

Also in the third quarter, device makers will be able to start shipping Windows Mobile 6 devices with Office Mobile 2007 preinstalled.

Microsoft To Debut 'Origami' Ultra-Mobile PC Specs For Vista

By Paula Rooney

Microsoft is at work on a version 2.0 "Origami" experience for Windows Vista on Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC).

The second set of possible UMPC specifications under consideration calls for ultra-thin PCs that weigh less than 1.5 pounds, incorporate 5-inch or 7-inch displays .and are housed in an 18- to 20-mm footprint, executives said.

Potential features of the next-generation Origami design at the drawing board include an integrated QWERTY keyboard, a touch screen fully integrated into the LCD, at least 1 GB of memory, and battery life of between three and four hours, said Microsoft Vista development manager Vikram Madan, at the Windows Hardware Engineering conference.

Microsoft's first UMPC design, which appeared in 2006, is based on Windows XP Tablet Edition. That design specified systems weighing less than 2.5 pounds, offering 7-inch displays, integrated touch digitizer and thumb-based controls, between 512 MB and 1 GB of memory, and battery life of between two and three hours.

Microsoft revealed plans for its next Origami 2.0 design in 2007 on the heels of two significant UMPC announcements by Samsung and Intel.

In March, Samsung announced the first UMPC running Windows Vista, called Q1P, that weighs 1.7 pounds. That succeeds Samsung's first Q1 UMPC released last year.

And even as Microsoft plans to move forward on its Origami experience for Windows Vista, Intel last month unveiled a new Ultra-Mobile PC platform, code-named McCaslin. It expects OEMs to begin shipping McCaslin-based UMPCs this summer.

In late 2008, Intel plans to release an upgrade to the UMPC platform, code-named Menlow, and an associated chipset solution, code-named Poulsbo, that will ship on a single piece of silicon. The next-generation UMPC platform will feature a new 45-nm processor, code-named Silverthorne, Intel said.

Meanwhile, AMD is pursuing its own UMPC agenda based on its Geocode LX800 processors. At WinHEC, one AMD executive walked the halls carrying Data Evolution's compact, sleek Cathena XP UMPC weighing less than 2 pounds and running an AMD processor, Windows XP and featuring a 7-inch display. Raon Digital, a Korean OEM, also ships an ultra-mobile PC, Vega, that runs AMD's Geocdoe LX 800.

It remains unclear whether system builders will participate in the burgeoning UMPC market, if at all.

Many whitebox builders that enjoyed success in the desktop PC market were unable to gain a foothold in the notebook market, due in part to the lack of defined specifications.

New platforms, such as Intel's recently released Santa Rosa"Centrino and upcoming McCaslin UMPC based on Core 2 Duo, will provide specifications and reference designs early in the process to level the playing field, said one Intel executive at WinHEC.

David Stinner, president of Buffalo, N.Y.-basd USitek, said he has not heard about Intel's plans, but said it "would be an awesome market to get into." "Executives at the SMB clients I support would easily purchase UMPCs if I had an offering," he added.

But it may be an uphill climb for whitebook OEMs that want a piece of th action.

"Intel is creating a dedicated platform for UMPCs, and if it follows the laptop trend it won't be available to most system builders," said Microsoft's Madan. "But if a system builder can get what they need from Intel, it'll happen much faster."

Deepfish mobile web browser from Microsoft

Microsoft has recently announced the release of Deepfish, a web browser for mobile devices that’s still in its early stages. The new browser for smart devices promises to make the experience of browsing web pages closer to that of viewing the pages on a standard desktop browser.
For the most part, browsing the internet on a “smartphone” is cumbersome at best. There are a number of sites that have been developed with scaled down pages targeting mobile devices, but for the vast majority of web sites (including SlipperyBrick) you will need to view it in the full-size which can make it hard to view and navigate.
Toward the end of last year we had news of an
Opera web browser that has “Small Screen Rendering” that would “shrink” standard size pages down to be viewed in full on Samsung mobile phones. The Deepfish browser from Microsoft can be used owners of any smart phones or Pocket PC’s that are running Windows Mobile 5.0 or greater.
The Microsoft Live Labs site featuring Deepfish information has a
download page where you can register to be informed if you can test the new Deepfish browser yourself as a technology preview, although the page states that they are nearing capacity for their trial users. The site has many feedback comments from people already trying out the Deepfish browser, but Microsoft says that they are still a couple versions away from a real beta release.

Yahoo Partners with Microsoft for Mobile Service

marketingvox.com In a deal designed to expand the reach of its "Go for Mobile 2.0" service, Yahoo has signed a deal with Microsoft that will make its offering compatible with significantly more devices, according to MediaWeek.

Go for Mobile 2.0 is a Yahoo initiative to bring most of its web services to mobile users. The partnership will allow that service to run on 75 more Windows Mobile-powered devices, bringing the grand total to 175. The deal is huge for Yahoo, which now can allow its users to access their email, photos and other accounts wherever they are.

It also gives Yahoo a foothold in the smartphone market, which is becoming more attractive to content creators as well as advertisers because those phones can handle rich media more easily.

Under a separate deal, Yahoo Go 2.0 will be pre-installed on devices manufactured by HTC.
